My Hero Academia

Okay I genuinely have such mixed feelings on this series. When I went into it (currently reading book 1 of the manga, finished the series) my expectations were LOWWW don’t get me wrong I try not to be biased when consuming media but I already knew what the fandom was like and I knew that part of that HAD to be because of the show. But honestly, not that bad. Its not perfect and has plenty of flaws but like, I honestly found myself invested in the characters (particularly Bakugo, Dabi, Shigaraki..) when the show showed parts of their lives. I do really hate the misogyny of the series, despite having many female leads they barely get any backstory and when they do they are pushed aside for our male leads to have character growth.. cough cough uraraka cough cough.. It really sucks because I *know* the show could write good female characters, Ms. Todoroki despite me having a couple gripes with her is a well grounded and complex individual! There aren’t many more examples however if you look at the writing of our male characters you SEE that the writers can make complex characters, its not a writing issue its a misogyny issue. Bakugo has such good writing and is such an interesting take on a character having an inferiority complex, Todoroki/Dabi having the parallels they do because of how they reacted to similar trauma? Amazing! And yet despite the wonderful writing this show is capable of they only briefly show you a female character before ripping what could have been your favourite away from you. And don’t get me STARTED on Mineta. I do appreciate bones for not grabbing the characters and giving them same face syndrome as that’s kind of what I associate with bones now… anyways really good show but god it needs some fixing…

At The Speed Of Lies

This book was really good! had a lot of tense moments and the overall mood was stressful. I read it for a book review project for school and honestly i'd give it 3.5-4 stars. i cant give it 5 stars for one key reason: the ending. While majority of the book explained the little details which was very satisfying, as i got to figure things out along with the characters, for some reason the ending felt.. unfufilled? They didnt beat the terrorist cult thing at the end which i dont even mind because that would be hard to do but they didnt even TEASE a sequel. it felt like it landed flat for how good the rest of the book was. they had amazing disability rep, and despite the overarching theme being the mystery and crime going on, they still found time for Quinn (MC) to explore inner turmoil and the societal issues that she faces due to being disabled. Along with this, she is a really interesting protagonist!! shes a slighlty unreliable narrator but not in a malicious sense, more due to the fact that she cant see when shes in the wrong, or how shes affecting her friends. I enjoy the subtle forshadowing, such as a D3 link being used to report fake news under one of quinns posts. Its potrayal of conspiracy theorists and such is also both interesting and realistic. good book :3
